Plagiarism/Cheating Policy:
According to Webster, to plagiarize is, “to present an idea or words of another as one’s own.” This includes sources from the internet, online-translators via computer, via cell phone, etc. and other people. Any time that ideas or words are used that came from a source other than yourself (excluding single word look-ups of non-grammar based vocabulary), it must be documented in MLA format. Others’ ideas are only acceptable when the assignment asks for it. If there are any questions, they must be directed to the teacher before the assignment is turned in. If the teacher determines that a student has plagiarized or cheated on any assignment, quiz or test, the following will occur: The first offense will result in the student receiving a “0” for the assignment, test or quiz. The second offense will result in the same consequences. In addition, the parent may be contacted and a referral may be written. When students are testing (quizzes, tests and exams), ipods, cell phones, notes, etc. that are seen out, for whatever reason, will be considered cheating and result in a zero.
Homework:
The purpose of homework is to practice what you learn in class. Homework is due on the date established in class. If there is no written homework you are expected to study your vocabulary and grammar for 15 minutes nightly.
Test Retake Policy:
Students are able to retake tests within two weeks of the date that the test was originally given to the class. Students will receive up to 70% on a test retake. Students should be proactive in scheduling a make-up in the event of schedule conflicts. However, tests that are allowed to be retaken are at the teacher’s discretion.
Extra Credit: Extra credit is an opportunity for students who have completed all of the required course work, to bring up their grade. It is given only at the teacher’s discretion. In order to be eligible to participate in this opportunity, all required classwork, homework, quizzes, projects, exams and other assignments must be turned in (you may have no zero’s in the gradebook).
Make-Up Work Policy:
Make-up work is only available with an excused absence. It is the responsibility of the student to collect make-up work and complete the missed assignment(s) within 5 days of returning to school. Sometimes the student may need to stay after school to make up missed assignments (tests, quizzes, presentations, etc.); please see the teacher to make arrangements. Each student will provide his or her own transportation if making up assignments before or after school.
When you are absent, it is suggested to contact classmates through the class Facebook group or e-mail Señora Vaz to clarify any questions.
Late Work Policy:
No late work will be accepted.
Tests and Projects:
Previously announced assessments will be taken as soon as you return for school. You may need to come in after school to ensure enough time is given. Previously announced projects are due by the final date. Please make arrangements to have your project submitted by the due date. See me with any questions or concerns.
Student Behavior and Consequences
Classroom Expectations:
Consequences:
Just as each of you are individuals and all cases are individual, I will handle all disciplinary cases according to the severity of the incident. Disciplinary action is left to her discretion and may include a teacher conference with the student, phone call or e-mail home, a “time out” in the office or another classroom, an administrative referral, etc.
Cell Phones, Chromebooks & Electronic Devices
Electronics are a valuable resource. They may be used in class when permitted by the teacher. Five points will be awarded each day for appropriate use of electronic devices. There will be no warnings, if these devices are use inappropriately the five points will be deducted for that day.
Bathroom/Water Procedure:
Students should use the restroom and get water before and after class. In case of emergencies, students will be given 3 bathroom passes at the beginning of each quarter. They will only be permitted to use the restroom or get water those three times per quarter during class time. Any remaining passes at the end of the semester will be extra credit. Students must show their school issued ID card in order to leave the classroom. School policy states that students are not use the restroom within the first and last 15 minutes of a class block, so students should plan accordingly. If a medical situation arises where the parent feels that this will not work for their student, please email me or send a signed note letting me know for how long the doctor feels that this policy should be excused. A doctor’s note may or may not be needed, depending on the need.
